Hi! I’m Ross. I live in Ojai, CA, love to make music and order Postmates way too often.
I’ve been a recording artist for Merge Records with two different bands (neither of which you’ve heard of) since 2006. My first band was called The Broken West, and we put out two records: 2007’s relatively well-received I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On, and 2008’s less well-received Now Or Heaven. We broke up — because that’s what bands do — and I started a solo project called Apex Manor, whose debut The Year Of Magical Drinking was released in 2011. My follow-up — Heartbreak City — came out in 2019 on Merge (it only took me seven years).
I’m signed as a songwriter/composer to Rough Trade. I’ve licensed my songs to lots of different TV shows and movies, ranging from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Atlanta’, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Office’ to the underrated Shark Night 3D. My music has also been used in commercials for Comcast, Fidelity, and Oral B (I genuinely enjoy their toothbrushes), among others.
I also write music for film and TV. I wrote the theme songs for CNN’s ‘The Lead With Jake Tapper’, and A&E’s ‘The Many Sides Of Jane’. I’m also not averse to podcasts — I wrote the theme for Crooked Media’s ‘Friends Like These’, hosted by Ana Marie Cox.
I’ve scored a couple of movies — one for Fullscreen featuring two Vine stars (I didn’t know there was such a thing before I did the movie) and the other for Lionsgate featuring some YouTube stars (didn’t know what that was, either — I don’t get out much). I’ve also scored a few short films, a web series for The CW, and written more commercial demos than I can count!
Lately, I’ve been writing a lot of trailer music for Netflix, including ‘That ‘90s Show’, ‘The Exchange’, and the new animated feature, Nimona. I also had the privilege of co-writing the lead single from Netflix’s new animated series, ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’.
In my downtime, I hang out with my two year old daughter and help run a pimento cheese business with my mom and dad. I love writing music for just about anything and I wake up on the earlier side.
